What's behind this
According to a report by SBI Research, the Indian government has sufficient fiscal headroom to absorb a revenue loss of about ₹50,000 crore that could arise from scrapping the long‑term capital gains (LTCG) tax. The study says the loss may be limited to Rs 40,000‑50,000 crore in FY28 and that the tax could be abolished across investor categories without significantly disrupting fiscal consolidation. The proposed changes include raising the annual exemption limit, lowering tax rates for longer holding periods and increasing the Securities Transaction Tax. Earlier coverage noted that Sebi’s LTCG proposal had lifted market optimism.
